How do the costs work?
There are two portions to the cost of an DSL connection:
- DSL line rental payable to Telkom or us, depends on line speed and who you ordered it from.
- DSL account from an Internet Service Provider such as Vanilla.
What we offer
Vanilla offers four different quality of internet access via ADSL, so that we are able to accommodate the needs of everyone, whether it be for home or business use.
1. DSL LINE RENTAL
We supply a Telkom DSL line upgrade for you at no cost.
Note:
When applying for a line, the Telkom setup process can take from 2 days to 1 month to install and is NOT available on pre-paid lines. When cancelling a line, you are required to notify us 30 days in advance if you wish to avoid having to pay for an additional month's rental.
The line that you choose will determine the speed of your connection (i.e. how fast web pages and emails will download)
| Telkom Line speed | Monthly cost |
| 384kbps | R149 |
| 512kbps | R325 |
| 4096kkbps | R410 |
2. DSL ACCOUNTS
A. CHOOSE: SHAPED or UNSHAPED:
Depending on your needs, you will need to chose bewtween shaped and unshaped DSL accounts.B. CHOOSE: The smallest amount you need (you can upgrade any time):
Vanilla has devised a billing policy to suit the user: the user will be charged for the minimum that he/she wishes to use. Say for example, a user has a 1GB (pre-paid) account and uses 1GB + 50MB of bandwidth in the month. He/she will then be billed for 1GB (R69) + 50MB (@10c), which works out to only R74. Most other ISPs would charge an additional 1GB account or 500MB topup packages, which work out more costly for the user.SHAPED (SAIX or IS)

IS Fixed Price Basic Uncapped
These high-traffic, highly-affordable packages are usually used with 384/512/4096kbps lines. What other ISPs will not tell you, is that the performance of these types of uncapped accounts is dependant on the contention ratio or the oversubscription amount that the networks use. They assume that not all subscribers (customers) will be using the internet 100% of the time. While these accounts do not always give the best performance or ping they are very affordable for high volume international downloads.

IS (International accounts)
These high-traffic, highly-affordable packages are usually sold as "uncapped" 384/512/1024kbps accounts. What other ISPs will not tell you, is that these accounts actually have what is called a threshold, a euphimism for slowing you down tremendously when you reach the stated limit. At Vanilla, where we value our client's trust,we are here to sell you what they really are, high-quantity, affordable DSL accounts.

Local only DSL
This is for the user who wants to access sites and servers that are within South Africa only.
Local only DSL:
- R59 for a 3GB account
- usage over charged at only 3 cents per MB
- unshaped - no port shaping
For the advanced user: How to use two DSL accounts e.g. seperate local and international
IS (Internet Solutions) bandwidth packages are high-quantity, low cost, sattelite bandwidth accounts. They are excellent for heavy downloaders, and gamers who are seeking a more affordable option to play their favourite games on. It also allows access to the IS news server. The following packages sport large local bandwidth limits, and allows you to browse internationally for the first portion of your overall limit.

NOTES
- All Vanilla accounts, (except the IS accounts) are uncapped (i.e. we will continue to provide access after the pre-paid amount is used). In order to manage the risk a refundable deposit is always required.
- A GB (gig) is a unit of data. 1 gig allows you to send approximately 100 000 emails without attachments, browse 12 500 web pages or download 5 000 Word documents.
- We recommend that you take the smallest package you think you need as you can always upgrade or change and we will not cap you.
- The monthly cost of an DSL connection includes a line rental and a DSL account cost, and a line rental cost. Your choice of DSL line from Telkom will determine how fast your internet download and upload speeds will be.
- To work out your monthly costs, you need to add these two together. Please note that Telkom charges a once-off installation fee on DSL lines.

- PLEASE NOTE: If at any time you experience a problem with your account then we will happily provide you with a back-up alternative account!
